Investing in Patient Care: Clinical Expansion

MaineHealth Pen Bay Hospital completed the third and final phase of its emergency department renovation project last summer that nearly doubled the size of the department.
MaineHealth Pen Bay Hospital marked the end of two extensive projects in 2024, part of an ongoing effort to increase access to high-quality care for our communities.
In the summer, the third and final phase of the MHPBH emergency department (ED) renovation project was completed, adding 11 additional exam rooms and a new ambulance entrance. The ED expansion project, funded by local donations and an investment from MaineHealth, was a three-year, three-phase project that nearly doubled the size of the department from 9,000 to 15,000 square feet and increased the number of exam rooms from 13 to 25. The updated space also features a three-room behavioral health suite, new medication room, clean supply and soiled utility rooms.
The project was necessary for several reasons, including advancements in emergency medicine that require more equipment and time but also lead to better outcomes for patients, especially those suffering a stroke or heart attack. There has also been a significant increase in the severity of cases requiring emergency care in recent years, as well as an increase in behavioral health cases. In October, the MaineHealth Rockland Health Center (MHRHC) its doors inside the Rockland Plaza at 75 Maverick Street, consolidating five departments into one building that were spread out around Knox County.
The MHRHC is now the new home to the hospital’s primary and walk-in care, physical therapy, occupational therapy and occupational health departments. MaineHealth Primary Care Rockland and MaineHealth Walk-In Care Rockland were formerly located at 22 White Street in Rockland. MaineHealth Physical and Occupational Therapy Rockland was formerly housed inside the Physicians Building on the MaineHealth Pen Bay Campus. MaineHealth Occupational Health Rockland was moved from 731 Commercial Street, half-a-mile down the road from MHPBH.
This new space is more centrally located in the community and creates more opportunities for collaboration and conversation for care team members regarding patient progress.
“The completion of these two projects marks years of hard work and sacrifices from care team members. Both projects allowed us to make significant upgrades to increase the space, tools and resources needed to treat a variety of patients for years to come.”
